Portland Recording Wrap-up

Portland was better than we had expected it to be. Granted, we expected it to be pretty great - but I think we were all pretty pleased by the amount of work we accomplished (4 complete songs in 4 days) and the amount of fun we had (a fantastic lunch & dinner every night followed by boozing at some of Portland's finest night spots - including a bar that serves incredible hot dogs until 3am - every night. Also, we visited Multnomah Falls - a pretty mind-blowing experience.

Also notable is the fact that the five of us slept in bunk beds in the same room at this hostel without getting sick of each other. Also, I don't think I woke anyone up with my snoring - maybe because I purchased some breath-rite strips when we hit town.

Most of the fun we had was due to the hospitality and studio-wizardry of Dylan Magierek. The Type Foundry felt comfortable from the moment I set foot in it. The space is unbelievable and I highly recommend recording there if you're ever in the greater Portland metro area. The equipment is top notch and the space is big enough to get some really cool sounds. The A/C went out while we were there, but that made recording a bit grittier which is what we like. We like it rough. We've signed waivers to that end. Don't call the cops.

We tracked four songs that will be on our next record. We're finishing the album in a few months at Electrical Audio here in Chicago and Dylan will be joining us to finish the sessions.

In the meantime, we have one show booked at Schubas w/ Wax Fang on July 2nd. We're also in the midst of booking other Chicago shows for the summer and will definitely get out of the area for some shows in the Midwest.

The next wave of remixes should be finished pretty soon. The contributors are busy with their own projects / lives / jobs etc, so no pressure on them. I'm excited to hear the results, though.

Our official site will be updated soon w / a more straightforward front page that will feature blog updates - probably most often by me.

That's all - the new record is a third of the way in the can!!! That's exciting. We have a few album titles we're kicking around, but nothing has stuck yet.

Peter Hook of New Order is DJ'ing at Smart Bar after the show. Nate called him a few days ago and asked if he'd be willing to fly over and DJ our afterparty at Smart Bar for free. Of course, he agreed.

Mt.St.Helens Prepare For Epic Halloween Concert & Arrival of the Centicorn
Chicago, IL -

Chicago in Autumn...there's nothing quite like it. As the poet Robert Frost famously wrote in 1910, "Falling leaves slowly drifting, the wind comes along and then it goes swifting, conkers crashing on the ground, making a lovely crispy sound, brown leaves spiraling together, gentle breezes in the wood, evergreen trees staying green which is very, very good." Yes, Autumn has descended upon Chicago and with it, Halloween - the favorite holiday of Chicago band, mt.st.helens.

As Ben Geier, drummer for Chicago's famed mt.st.helens, prepares for his band's upcoming appearance on Friday, October 27th at Ronny's (2205 N. California - Chicago, IL) a smile brings warmth to his usually cool visage. "This will be the most important show mt.st.helens ever plays. We are truly laying it all on the line at Ronny's on Friday night." After a brief pause to light a cigarette, the drummer continues, "We hope to summon the Centicorn. Once summoned, he will ascend to his rightful place in the kingdom of mortal men and we, the apostles of the Hundred Horns, shall carry out his bidding in this mortal realm...no matter the cost."

Geier is referring to the famed Centicorn, a one hundred horned unicorn that the band famously brought to life in an eponymous single released in early 2005.

"People must accept that the Centicorn is the way and the light. They can exault him by reciting this simple prayer: Beast of burden, We command thee, Slay and conquer, Horns o'plenty, Lead dark armies, Kill and vanquish, We praise thee, Centicorn." The twenty five year old drummer continued, "We're going to need the audience's help for this on October 27th. Let's hope they come prepared to accept the Centicorn into their hearts."

Mt.St.Helens play Ronny's (2205 N. California - Chicago, IL) Friday, October 27th with Hanalei and Hirudin. 8pm, $5, 21+ - costumes are encouraged.

Houses of the Holy : great album. it's very...bright. good growth from the untitled album.

Did you know that the song "houses of the holy" was supposed to be on that album, but for some reason was pushed back an album?

anyway, I think the first 90 seconds of 'Song remans the same' is an awesome intro to the album. then the transition into the 'rain song' = smooth. The contrast between the two makes the rain song more 'effective'

my favorite deep cut is 'the crunge' and 'no quarter' gets better the more times you listen to it. i learned how to walk basslines listening to the end of 'the ocean'

i think the big thing to notice is how page started getting big into layering multiple guitar lines....

in conclusion. one of their stronger, poppier (i.e. less bluesy) albums

I really like the Fleetwoods a lot. The songs are extremely innocent, the production value is pretty washed out and warm and the harmonies are amazing. I recently found this clip of them performing "Come Softly to Me" on American Bandstand. This is straight out of a David Lynch film. Watch how creepy it is when the girls start swaying in time with each other and check out the extremely removed expression on the guy's face. They definitely don't intend this to be creepy by any means, but this whole thing is like a fever dream. In all seriousness, this makes me like them a lot more. Check it out.

A little junk store/resale shop opened up directly across the street from my apartment. I’ve been watching them move in with much interest because of their outstanding signage/advertising strategies. When they first moved in, they had a sign proclaiming “Best Prices in Town” (the hand drawn letters barely fit on the sign – classic 5th grade action), which is a pretty bold statement for a resale shop because…how would you know? They topped themselves last weekend for their grand opening celebration with the sign picture above. That's right...ALL DAY.

Flexibility. My company offers the lovely policy of "flex-scheduling" to its employees. In short, if you put in 40 hours by the time noon rolls around on Friday, you're free to leave for the day. I usually take this time to exercise, take Lola for a visit to the dog park or do errands that I normally wouldn't have time for (or wouldn't want to battle rush hour traffic to do). Today, I used my Friday afternoon off to get a haircut at Big Hair. As far as haircuts go, you can't really beat this place. They only charge about $12-$15 to cut my hair, sometimes less depending on how long it takes and you don't feel obligated to engage in small talk. Today's visit included a nice chat about Lucas - "Lucas with the Lid Off" after it came on the radio. That song always takes me back to sophomore year of High School. Every morning before school, MTV would play Lucas with the Lid off followed by "As I Lay Me Down" by Sophie B. Hawkins. Now, thanks to MTV, I always associate these songs with each other. I like the Lucas one a lot more - which isn't saying much because the Sophie B. Hawkins song is pretty amazingly obnoxious. My testicles seem to wither each time I hear it. Even more disturbing is the fact that if I ever hear that song on the radio I leave it on...purely for the nostalgic value. Ahem.

Things got slightly better when Dr. Dre & 2pac's "California Love" started dominating MTV shortly thereafter.

Anyway, the girl cutting my hair decided she didn't like the song anymore after I decoded the chorus for her. When it sounds like Lucas is saying "Bla-bla-bla-bla-bla-'sup", he's actually saying "Whatever bubbles, bubbles up". I thought it was cooler as "blablablabla" too. Go find the Lucas mp3 somewhere on the internutz. Also, see if you can find the amazing video that Michel Gondry did for the song.

Progress. I was officially hired in December after contracting for a few months. Last week, I moved to a bigger desk with a lovely southern view. St. Ben's marks the horizon and also the spot where my apartment is, more or less. Which reminds me of that famous punchline: "Hey, I can see my house from here." Sweet feathery Jesus, I love my new view.

Auld Lang Syne & Guid-willie

Auld Lang Syne is an odd sort of song to have attained general currency, the words written as they are in a dialect that hardly anyone speaks or understands any more. It has a peculiar power, though, perhaps especially so around midnight after a long evening's drinking and fellowship. Its currency, by the way, is global: visiting the People's Republic of China in 1982, as that nation was just emerging from the long, xenophobic Mao Tse-tung despotism, I found that there were three Western tunes known to everyone under thirty: a feeble pop tune named Red River Valley, the old classic Clementine (which, however, Chinese people all believed to be of North Korean origin), and Auld Lang Syne.

The dialect here is Lallans, the speech of lowland Scotland in the 18th and 19th centuries. "Auld lang syne" translates literally as "old long since," i.e. times long past. "Guid-willie" means "hearty," or "filled with goodwill." A "waught" is a deep draught of some potent drink.
